Publishing the lane that performs worst
Corridor 12 runs at 92.4% on time. It is the weakest figure on our network and it sits on the timetable next to the others.
There is an easy version of a performance page. You calculate a network-wide average, you present it as a single confident number, and lanes like Corridor 12 disappear into it.
We publish per-lane instead, which means the timetable has a 92.4% on it in the same column as a 98.6%.
Why Corridor 12 is the weak one
It is the harvest flow out of Halgate. Volume is weather-bound and arrives in surges; the terminal gate closes at 22:00; and a surge that peaks after the gate closes waits until morning. None of that is fixable by running the train differently.
Why show it
Because the alternative teaches a customer nothing. A shipper on the Ravensworth shuttle and a shipper moving grain out of Halgate need different information, and a blended figure gives neither of them theirs.
There is also a self-interested reason, and it is worth admitting: a carrier who only publishes their good lanes has told you what they think of the others. Anyone reading a performance page carefully already knows to ask which lanes are missing.
