Of that total, 7h 00m is spent standing still under a crane rather than moving — 36% of the door-to-door clock. Cutting a lane's transit almost never means running faster; it means taking a lift out of it.

Corridor 15 is the longest routing on the network and the clearest illustration of where transit time actually goes on a hub-and-spoke system.

The running time is the smaller half of the story. Fenwick to Kelvedon passes through several intermediate terminals, and each pass-through costs an hour and a half whether or not anything is lifted — the consist stops, the path is re-taken, the brake test is done. Add the receipt at Fenwick and the release at Kelvedon and better than a third of the published transit is a box sitting still.

What that means if you are buying

It means asking a carrier to run faster on this lane is asking the wrong question. The transit falls when a stop comes out of it, not when the train speeds up. It is also why we quote terminal-to-terminal rather than yard-to-yard: the yard figure would be flattering and useless.

Bonded storage at the far end

Kelvedon has 41,000 m² of bonded warehousing on the estate boundary, which for a customer running an import programme is often worth more than an hour off the transit.
